Protecting Our Most Vulnerable: A Guide for Families
When we talk about the victims of phone scams in Malaysia and Singapore, the numbers are staggering. Millions of dollars are lost every year. But behind those statistics are real people—often our parents and grandparents—who have spent decades working hard to build a nest egg, only to lose it in a single afternoon to a ruthless caller.
Scammers intentionally target the elderly. They prey on their trust in authority figures, their willingness to answer unfamiliar calls, and sometimes, their limited understanding of how modern digital banking and Caller ID manipulation works.
As younger family members, it is our responsibility to shield them. VetoCaller was built specifically to be the tool you need to protect your family.
The Conversation You Need to Have
The first step in protecting your parents or elderly relatives is having an honest, non-judgmental conversation about scams.
Many elderly victims suffer in silence because they feel ashamed or embarrassed that they were tricked. You need to remove that stigma. Explain to them that modern scams are incredibly sophisticated and that anyone can fall for them.
Give them one simple, unbreakable rule: If you do not recognize the number, or if the person on the phone asks for money, passwords, or OTPs, hang up immediately and call me.

Being the Tech Shield
As the "tech support" of the family, you can take active steps to secure their devices.
Clean Their Contacts: Ensure that all legitimate doctors, family members, banks, and services are saved in their phone contacts. Tell them they only need to answer calls from saved contacts.
Handle the "Missed Calls": Instruct your parents not to return missed calls from unknown numbers. If they are worried it was important, have them send the number to you.
Use VetoCaller as the Verification Layer: When they send you that unknown number, look it up on VetoCaller. If it’s a verified business, you can tell them it’s safe to call back. If the community has flagged it as spam or a threat, you can tell them to safely ignore and block it.
Your Reports Protect Their Parents
When you use VetoCaller to look up a number for your mother, you are relying on the reports submitted by thousands of other users.
When you receive a scam call and take 30 seconds to report it on VetoCaller, you are returning the favor. You are actively warning the system that an aggressive scammer is on the prowl. Your simple report might be the exact flag that stops that scammer from tricking someone else's father later that day.
We are a community-driven charity project because we believe that collective action is the only way to beat these syndicates. Protect your family by educating them, and protect your broader community by actively reporting dangerous numbers.
